A Yorkshireman by birth, I’m a retired hypnotherapist and former adult education teacher, now living on the outskirts of Manchester with my wife and a crazy Jack Russell terrier called Joe (because he looks like a Joe).
I’ve been a professional writer for almost thirty years, and turned to writing full time when I retired in 2010, since when I have put up something like 15 titles on the Kindle and Smashwords. In January 2012, Crooked {Cat} Publishing picked up the Sanford 3rd Age Club Mysteries, and I have since signed contracts on Voices.
I write in two distinct genres. As David W Robinson, I produce the light-hearted, cosy crimes of the Sanford 3rd Age Club Mysteries of which my current title is The Filey Connection. Writing as David Shaw, I also turn out much darker material; psychological thrillers such as The Handshaker which although they're listed as crime thrillers, border on the paranormal.
The works of David W Robinson are targeted at anyone of any age who enjoys an old fashioned murder mystery cracked by the amateur sleuth. There is no sex, no violence and no strong language.
The works of David Shaw, however, concentrate on more adult themes. Laden with paranormal and sci-fi overtones, they contain graphic elements of violence, sex, and the language reflects the modern world. Asking questions which border on the wilder shores of psychological theory, these novels are aimed exclusively at an adult audience.
A devout follower of Manchester United, during such free time as I have, I enjoy reading, photography, cryptic crosswords and other puzzles, and putting together slideshow trailers and podcast readings from my works.

The Filey Connection
It’s summertime and the Sanford 3rd Age Club are living it up in the seaside town of Filey. But life is not without its problems for amateur sleuth, Joe Murray.
Was Nicola Leach’s death an accident or deliberate? Did Eddie Dobson fall into the sea or did he jump? What’s going on behind the innocent façade and closed doors of the Beachside Hotel? Where do the intimidating Irwin brothers fit into the picture, who raided Joe’s room and why did the mugger pick on Brenda?
Questions Joe and his sidekicks must find answers for is they’re to solve the mystery of The Filey Connection
'An easy to read, enjoyable murder mystery story with a clever but grumpy amateur detective.' Lindsay Healy The Little Reader library
'Angela Lansbury meets 1st Lady’s Detective Agency. With all the music references and the average age of the characters, it’s a good read for the over 40’s.' KB Walker Kindle owner.

The Handshaker
A gritty, thriller with paranormal overtones.
Will a hypnotised woman submit to rape? Will she kill at the hypnotist’s command? Will she commit suicide at his whim?
Serial killer, The Handshaker, has terrorised the small Pennine town of Scarbeck for two years. Intelligent, quick witted and adaptable, he has abducted, raped and murdered numerous women and yet eludes the police.
But when he abducts Patricia Sinclair, girlfriend of millionaire hypnotist, Alex Croft the game changes.
Croft becomes the hunter, bringing his analytical and hypnotic expertise to bear. In a dramatic switchover, he finds himself the hunted, on the run from the police, drawn deeper into The Handshaker's web of insanity and pulled inexorably towards a nerve-jangling, cliffhanger confrontation.
‘This is one compelling rollercoaster of a read’ Laurie Clayton, Kindle owner.
Caution: contains strong language and graphic scenes of sex and violence.
